You don’t have to be a full-blown bookworm to appreciate John K. King Used & Rare Books, which can be found along West Lafayette Boulevard in the Motor City. We’re always quick to sing the praises of Belle Isle as a whole, but the Blue Heron Lagoon Trail is an especially wonderful destination on Detroit’s island park. At 2.2 miles in length, it’s long enough to give your legs a satisfying stretch, but not so lengthy that you’ll be completely exhausted. During your stroll, you’ll pass beautiful Blue Heron Lagoon itself – in addition to the William Livingstone Memorial Lighthouse and gorgeous views of the Detroit River. Motor City is full of fun things to see and do, and with a location on the water and near so many fun attractions, there's no shortage of amazing day trips and adventures in Detroit, Michigan! Some of our favorite things to do in Detroit include:
- Dining. From The Dakota Inn Rathskeller and Grand Trunk Pub to PJ’s Lager House and Grey Ghost Detroit, there's no shortage of amazingly delicious restaurants in Detroit, Michigan! One of our all-time favorite restaurants in Detroit, Michigan, is Duly's Place. Humble and unassuming, this eatery is open 24/7 and certainly knows how to keep its customers happy. Chow down on a hamburger, an order of fries, or an indulgent chili dog. It’s classic diner fare, but that doesn’t mean it’s anything less than mouthwatering. Another must-visit restaurant in Detroit is Golden Fleece. If you’re a fan of Greek cuisine, Golden Fleece is a must-visit in Motor City. They’ve got all your favorites: everything from kebabs to gyros to salad is on the menu, and you might just want to order one of everything. Greek food just doesn’t get much more authentic than this in Detroit.
- Get Outside. Detroit might be known as the Motor City, but the natural beauty of our town never ceases to amaze us. Some of our favorite places to get outside and explore in Detroit include Lake St. Clair Metropark, Blue Heron Lagoon, Milliken State Park and Harbor, Eliza Howell Park, Nichols Arboretum, and Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. While some of these destinations, such as Nichols Arboretum, are technically located outside Detroit, we think they're all well-worth a little day trip to experience!
- Detroit Public Library. Hermione Granger said it best: When in doubt, go to the library. We wholeheartedly agree. The Detroit Public Library is a haven for bibliophiles; a gorgeous institution that looks like it’s straight out of a book lover’s dream. While there are numerous locations under the Detroit Public Library system, none of them are quite as exquisite as the main location on Woodward Ave. When this library was built, it was constructed with marble, giving it a rich and elegant look. One visit here and you may never want to leave.
- Small Town Day Trips. If you need to get out of the city for awhile, but want more of a "small town" kind of experience than the above natural areas can provide, we suggest packing up and heading out to a nearby small town for a day. One of our favorite small town day trips near Detroit is Frankenmuth. Frankenmuth is about 90 minutes from Detroit, but literally feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle of Motown. The area was settled by German immigrants long ago and the town still retains much of its Bavarian culture. In fact, Frankenmuth is known as Michigan's Little Bavaria.
