Located in Charlestown, Rhode Island inside Burlingame State Park, Watchaug Pond provides a beloved and scenic swimming area to locals and visitors alike.
The pond covers 573 acres and is one of the largest fresh water ponds in Rhode Island. Most of the pond is located in the State Park but there are a few private homes in remote corners of the water. Some you can even rent on AirBnB to spend more time in the natural oasis.
Because of this large size you can have a number of different experiences in the one body of water. The western side is more remote, marshy and wild while the beachfront is typically well populated with visitors.
A boat ramp provides water access to motorboats and water skiing is common on the pond. Others prefer to fish for the plentiful trout or swim at the beach. Activities abound in this sprawling State Park.
Off season and early in the morning you can catch moments of peace and serenity before the crowds of visitors arrive. Early risers are also rewarded with more plentiful parking options.
Whether you’ve been hiking all morning and need a rest of you’re just looking for a cool, refreshing swim on a hot summer day, Watchaug Pond is a welcome escape.
