The tiny town of Lockhart is known as the “Barbecue Capital of Texas,” and Black’s is largely to thank for such a prestigious designation. Family-owned since day one, Black’s is the oldest barbecue restaurant in Texas, and the meat is smoked the same way it has been for nearly 100 years.
There's always a line out the door at Black's Barbecue in Lockhart - and for good reason.

Today, the pit is manned by Kent Black, who uses the exact same cooking methods as his grandfather. After all, why should you fix something that isn't broken?
Historic photos and vintage memorabilia cover the walls - along with plenty of taxidermy, of course. What's a BBQ restaurant without a few trophies on display?
Get it lean, or with a little fat. Both ways are delicious! The brisket also comes chopped and mixed with a touch of BBQ sauce.
Other meats include giant beef ribs, smoked turkey breast, pork chops, barbecue chicken, pork spare ribs, and homemade sausage that uses an 80-year-old family recipe.
Everything is sold by the pound, so order as much or as little as you'd like.
Sandwiches are also on the menu! Choose between sliced or chopped beef brisket, sliced turkey breast, or sausage - or pick two and make it a double meat!
Served on a perfectly toasted bun, the sandwiches come with BBQ sauce, pickles, and onions. There are also a variety of scrumptious side dishes, plus decadent desserts like cobblers, banana pudding, and ice cream.
Address: 215 North Main Street, Lockhart, TX 78644.
Hours are 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday-Thursday, and 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
Black’s has several other locations in the Hill Country. Visit its website or Facebook page for more information.
