The trail is just under a mile and a half but is rated as moderate due to some narrow and steep sections on the trail. Hikers also report the presence of poison oak near the trail, so be aware where you step and plan to wear long pants and sturdy hiking boots.
The trailhead can be found right along Bayne Road on the boundary of Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park. There isn't a lot of space for parking, so some hikers opt to pay the $10 entrance fee to the park in order to park their car. This will add some length to your hike but it may be worth it if you'd like guaranteed parking.
The first section of the trail is quite beautiful with lush, green views during the spring and early summer. There is typically an abundance of wildflowers and views of Mt. Murphy are just gorgeous! You'll also enjoy the sound of the rushing American River and flowing creeks nearby.
The first waterfall you'll come across is Dutch Creek Falls. Consisting of two large cascades, it makes for a refreshing sight! Many hikers mistake these falls for the end, but just wait, there's a LOT more to see...
Further up the trail, you'll come across a much larger waterfall. Johntown Falls is spectacular and large! It joins with Upper Dutch Falls to create a multi-tier cascade that tumbles down the hillside.
As this is an out-and-back trail, you'll simply turn around and retrace your steps back to the trailhead when you're ready. It's amazing how much beauty is packed into this short, simple hike! See the trail map and plan your adventure here.
