Killens Pond has deep roots stretching back to the late 1700s. Over time, the natural area surrounding the body of water was developed. Delaware officials designated the pond area as an official state park in 1965.
The trail surrounding the pond is considered “easy” to “moderate,” meaning it is perfect for hikers of all skill levels. It features a packed earth surface with the opportunity to link to a number of side connector trails.
The Killens Pond trail is adorned with a variety of species of pine trees that add to the picturesque scenery.
Depending on the time of year, visitors will have an opportunity to see a number of animals, plants, and even species of fungi. This image of mushrooms is one such example.
The pondside trail alongside Killens Trail is one of four systems within the state park. Others include a flat-surface bicycle trail that begins outside the park grounds, a more intensive cross-country course that includes the west end of the pond, and a life course trail that includes portions of the forested area.
There are a number of other amenities for recreational enthusiasts at Killens Pond State Park. Among them: boating, camping, canoeing, disc golf, fishing, geocaching, horseshoes, nature programs, picnicking, and swimming.
