Named for President John Adams, the fortress is rich with history. It was used by the United States Army for over a century, and later by the United States Navy for about a decade.

In 1965, the State of Rhode Island acquired Fort Adams, and it became Fort Adams State Park. Today it’s recognized as a National Historic Landmark. The fort is open to the public and welcomes visitors for both historic tours and recreation. Each year, the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals are held here at Fort Adams.
