You don’t have to venture far to find some amazing hiking in Lexington. Just outside of the city, Raven Run Nature Sanctuary beckons hikers with hundreds of wild acres, miles of trails, and jaw-dropping river views. Lace up your hiking shoes and get ready for the kind of adventure you can only have in Kentucky – here’s what’s waiting for you on the Kentucky River Overlook Trail in Raven Run Nature Sanctuary.
The sanctuary covers 734 acres and it borders the Kentucky River, a river that provides drinking water for more than 700,000 people.
Hike the Kentucky River Overlook Trail to take in a sweeping view of the river. The hike is 2.4 miles long and it takes about an hour to complete – you might want to allow a little extra time to take in the park’s scenery.
The parkland was once developed – it’s home to old ruins left by early settlers here and the ruins date back to the early 19th century. But nature has largely reclaimed the land and it feels as wild as it did long ago.
The trail can get a little busy, especially on nice days. Weekends, school breaks, and some holidays can be especially busy and the park sometimes has to close when the parking lots are full. To beat the crowds, start your hike early – the park opens at 9 a.m.
Raven Run Nature Sanctuary is located about 15 miles south of downtown Lexington. The sanctuary is open year-round, with the exception of some holidays. Once you have taken in this gorgeous overlook hike, here are some more breathtaking overlooks that offer jaw-dropping views.
