In the south, traditions are about as common as biscuits. We love our traditions; they shape us and they shape our state. The majority of us probably grew up with these traditions, learned them along the way, or even made a few ourselves. Here are 11 that outsiders might see as ‘strange’ but we see as completely normal.
Sunday supper is neither lunch nor dinner. It's a homecooked meal enjoyed with friends and family, usually after Sunday service. Gather around for that fried goodness...Sunday suppers are that one midday meal I always look forward to.
While some might say that body of water looks questionable, North Carolinians love our swimming holes. Sure, we have the Atlantic Ocean, and plenty of fresh (and freezing cold) mountain water to cool off in...but some of the best places to swim are those off the beaten path little swimming holes.

North Carolinians love a good Sunday drive. We don't necessarily need a destination - it's just fun to get in the car, blast some tunes, and drive around checking out the abundant gorgeous scenery!

If you're on the coast...there's no doubt you'll have an oyster roast of your own or at least attend one. There's nothing like shucking your own freshly caught oyster.
It's a Duke tradition to hold a massive bonfire after they beat Carolina.
And when Carolina beats Duke? They overtake Franklin St. with full force. It becomes an all-out celebration riot.

Peaches, strawberries, watermelon, azaleas, livermush, seafood...I mean, there's basically a festival for everything in North Carolina...but one thing is for certain: we love a good time!
Maybe it's the ol' black eyed peas, collard greens, and ham for your New Years Day meal. Maybe never eating the last loaf of bread, or letting someone sweep under your feet. There are plenty of superstitions all throughout the state, and of course, a few we (kind of) believe in...or at least are too scared NOT to do.
If there's one tradition I can consistently see in North Carolina, it's an abundance of state pride. We go through a lot with our state, but deep down, we love it more than anything. We stick to our motto and never forget where we came from or the place that shaped us. We're all Tar Heels forever.
