Living in Indiana has plenty of perks, but with every perk comes the not-so-sunny side of things. Even if you’re just passing through or visiting for a short time, there are a few things you need to know about Indiana. Here are 10 things everyone in Indiana should avoid at all costs.
1. Driving on bald tires
It doesn’t matter where you’re driving. In the spring and summer, potholes abound, and in the fall and winter, we have to worry about ice and other dangers. Make sure your tires are in good condition to avoid costly repairs and dangerous situations.
2. Swimming in a questionable creek
There are creeks everywhere in Indiana and while some might look tempting (particularly on an 85+ degree day), many are simply not safe for swimming. The same goes for eating any fish you might catch. Always look up stats on the water before guessing.
3. Trying to dodge conversations
This one is mostly for out-of-towners. Hoosiers love to talk and are more than willing to help you out when you’re lost or in need or a recommendation. Don’t love to talk? You might be in the wrong state. Just try to remember, Hoosiers are talking because they care, not because they’re trying to waste your time.
4. Donning another state's jersey
It honestly doesn’t matter if it’s football, baseball, or a college sport. Don’t show up in Indiana in another state’s jersey. You will get stared at and maybe even booed, and strangers will come up to you and ask what’s wrong with you. Just keep it in the suitcase.
5. Dieting during State Fair time
If you’ve never been to the Indiana State Fair, you’re missing out on amazing rides, games, sights, music, animals, vendors...and, oh yeah, food. The Indiana State Fair has some of the most amazing food around, but be forewarned: it’s almost all fried.
6. Going outside in the summer without sunscreen or water
The heat can get quite intense in Indiana and not protecting your skin or bringing water to stay hydrated is something you should never do. Also wear or bring sun screen and a bottle of water. Trust me, you’ll be thankful you did.
7. Not having a tornado/storm plan
While many Hoosiers will laugh at how out-of-towners panic about tornados, we’ll all admit tornados can be pretty serious (and terrifying) events. Always be sure you have a tornado plan in place and identify the room that everyone should meet in if there is an emergency. Having water and other supplies nearby is not a bad thought either.
8. Forgetting to stock up on food during a storm warning
On the same note, forgetting to buy bread, milk, or any basic essential from the grocery store in advance of a storm is a major mistake. Have you ever visited a grocery store in Indiana just before or during a storm? Guaranteed it will be wiped out and you’ll be out of luck.
9. Thinking that because the Dunes are on a lake they’re less fun than the shore
The Indiana Dunes are stunning and Lake Michigan is absolutely gorgeous. Honestly, if you’re looking for a beach substitute, this place is perfect and maybe even dangerous…you might find you enjoy it more than coastal beaches.
10. Believing Indiana is a drive-through state
This thinking should be avoided at all costs! If not, you risk missing out on an amazing state filled with some of the best places, people, and food in the country. Give it a shot. I guarantee we’ll prove you wrong.
Do you avoid all of these things or are you guilty of some? What else do all Hoosiers know to avoid?
