As the weather gets colder, and people begin to dress more warmly, the weather is shifting to winter in Alaska. This awesome season, the longest in the state, is filled with tons of great things to do. From skiing to aurora borealis, Alaska is the place to be when the temperature drops.
Winter in Alaska is a magical time of year.
With tens of feet of snow in some areas, ice fog, and crystal blue skies come February, winter in the Last Frontier is a wonder to behold.
Alaska is notoriously awesome for winter activities.
Whether you love backcountry skiing, snowboarding, or hitting one of our many ski resorts, there’s tons of fresh powder to enjoy. Enjoying the snow is one of the best things to do in our state during the wintertime.
Another great thing to do that isn’t readily available anywhere else is our ice climbing.
Alaska has most of the world’s glaciers, and that means world-class ice climbing. And if you’re in the Valdez area, hit one of the two epic frozen waterfalls where you can climb hundreds of feet on popular ice climbing routes.
Denali is not just the tallest mountain in Alaska, but also in all of North America.
And when alpenglow hits our mountain ranges? Absolute pleasure will ensue. Just another breathtaking reason why Alaska excels in the frozen months.
And since Alaska is one of the most prolific coffee drinkers in the nation, we really shine when the temperatures grow colder.
You can snuggle up with a cup of hot coffee and a good book, and be on your way to the perfect day. There’s nothing better than a hot latte on a cold day.
What’s better than enjoying a state that excels in hygge?
With crackling fires, warm sweaters, and warming up after a day outside playing in the cold, our six months of winter encourages getting cozy.
Backcountry winter camping also holds a special place in this cold and beautiful season.
If you have the chance to spend some time in Alaska during our coldest months, you’ll be rewarded with sights you won’t be able to see anywhere else. Winter in Alaska is an unbelievable bucket list experience!
