Iowa has great opportunities to cruise on the water: the Twilight Cruise Ship based in LeClair, the Lady of the Lake in Clear Lake, the American Queen out of Lansing, and many more. But did you realize that you can craft your own Iowa vacation with a houseboat cruise along the Mississippi River?
S&S Houseboat Rentals based out of Lansing, Iowa has an entire fleet of houseboats available! What a tremendous possibility for fun and adventure!
Now if you’ve never driven a boat, you might be hesitant to become a skipper. That is why S&S has staff with 30 years of experience go out with you for a short training cruise to make sure you are comfortable with your craft and how to navigate the river.
It’s actually not as hard as you might think; the river is marked with buoys to indicate where the main channel is located. Your instructor will go through how to safely check depth and even land on a beach for some sun, sand, and sleep. A boat license is not required, but you do have to be over 21 with a valid driver's license to operate one of S&S’s houseboats.
Imagine exploring the Mississippi in comfort with the flexibility to land on a beach, explore an island, or even travel through one of the locks and dams on this mighty river!
S&S asks that boats go no further than the 61 miles between La Crosse, Wisconsin to the north (upstream) and Prairie Du Chien to the south (downstream). This ensures that staff can easily reach you if any issues arise, while still allowing you plenty of room to explore the river.
If you are wondering where to spend the night, you can always dock at S&S. However, most people want to explore and spend the night docked to a beach.
The fuel tank is very large and it’s likely you won’t have to refuel. For safety and insurance purposes S&S does not permit night time cruising.
There are six houseboats to choose from. The larger boats, around 62 feet long, can comfortably sleep 10 people and have up to two full bathrooms. The maximum legal limit is 12 on these boats. The smaller houseboats are designed for six people but retain the comfort of the larger boats.
A kitchen with refrigeration, water, and bathroom facilities are all part of these amazing floating houses. The upper deck with an optional sun canopy is a great spot for viewing, relaxing, and eating. Air conditioning and heating are available when the generator is running or when docked at a marina.
The pricing varies by season and boat and can shift from $2,500 per week for a smaller boat in an off season to $5,500 per week for the largest boat in prime season. This one’s for the bucket list for sure. What a perfect way to mesh adventure and comfort, all while exploring the mighty Mississippi!
