Cumberland Falls is one of Kentucky’s crown jewels; this incredible waterfall is nationally recognized as one of the best in the country. It’s referred to as the “Niagara Falls of the South,” and once you experience it for yourself, you’ll understand why. Within Cumberland Falls State Park, there’s a trail that leads to both Cumberland Falls *and* another incredible cascade, Eagle Falls. It’s one of the most picturesque hikes in Kentucky, and easily among the best hiking trails in the U.S.
This is Cumberland Falls State Park, and it's 1,657 acres of pure Bluegrass beauty.
With 17 miles of hiking trails, Cumberland Falls is a hiker's paradise. The trails explore some of the park's most scenic spots, including, of course, the eponymous Cumberland Falls.
The Cumberland Falls via Eagle Falls Trail is a 1.8-mile loop trail that's rated as moderate. The most challenging aspect of the trail is its myriad staircases. Also, the lower parts of the trail can be quite muddy, depending on the season.
However, this adventure is worth each and every step climbed; the trail boasts spectacular views of two superlative waterfalls, including the Niagara of the South: Cumberland Falls.
What Eagle Falls lacks in size, it more than makes up for in beauty. The cascades tumble in perfect formation over several rocks and small cliffs. In the autumn, with the fall foliage and golden sunlight, this sublime scene will take your breath away.
The Cumberland Falls via Eagle Falls Trail is a short hike with a big payoff: tremendous views of two of the best waterfalls in Kentucky, including the mighty Niagara Falls of the South.
