It’s amazing the history you’ll find in our state without even trying. For instance, located on an unassuming corner in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho is one of the oldest standing buildings in the Gem State. The Fort Sherman Chapel was built during the 1800s and it’s, amazingly, still going strong. There’s a lot of history within these walls, so visiting the chapel is a must for anybody with an appreciation of Idaho’s past. Tucked away on a quiet corner on the campus of North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene, the Fort Sherman Chapel sure makes for a picture-perfect sight. Its charming and nostalgic appearance is a good clue to the amazing history the chapel holds!
The chapel was originally built in 1880 by the U.S. Army. Now considered Coeur d'Alene's oldest church, school, library, and meeting hall, you can almost feel the history resonating from the chapel's walls.
Fort Sherman represents a prominent part of Coeur d'Alene's history. Erected in 1877 after U.S. General William Tecumseh Sherman suggested building a military post in the area, Fort Sherman grew in tandem with the surrounding community. The chapel was one of many additions made to make the fort more comfortable for the families of soldiers.
Fort Sherman was officially abandoned in 1900 and the buildings sold at a public auction in 1905. Only two of the fort's original structures remain: the chapel and the officer's quarters. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a lot of effort has gone to preserving the old chapel.
Many denominations have used the chapel for church services over the years. These days, though, the chapel is largely used for weddings and small events. All proceeds from events go directly to supporting the chapel and ensuring the preservation of Coeur d'Alene's oldest standing building.
If you'd like to see the chapel for yourself, the Fort Sherman Walking Tour from Museum of North Idaho is the way to go. This 1.5-hour walking tour starts at the museum before taking you around the fort grounds. The tour ends with a visit inside the Fort Sherman Chapel.
