We love all the hiking opportunities in New Jersey, but we’ll admit it’s not the most mountainous state. That being said, there are trails that offer breathtaking views and steep elevation gains. Consider this hike, which is for experienced hikers only and offers the second highest elevation gain in New Jersey!
Ready to embark on a tough hiking adventure? The Sunrise Mountain and High Point via Appalachian Trail is the climb for you.
Located near Branchville, New Jersey, this loop trail is about 19.5 miles long and features an elevation gain of 2,696 feet.
As you're ascending to the second highest elevation in New Jersey, you'll get some beautiful views on this hike.
It feels like climbing up into the sky.
Much of the hike is done under a forest canopy, though, so you have the shade on your side.
Plus, the lush greenery of the forest is just so pretty. You'll also likely spot nice wildflowers and interesting wildlife on the hike.
There are plenty of points of interest along the way, including a fire tower to get a better look at the area.
It might seem exhausting to climb more stairs, but the view is worth it!
You also will come across a little cabin along the way.
It's an Appalachian Trail shelter, for hikers to sleep in. So scenic and pretty!
This trail is also used for mountain biking, too, if you'd like to get those miles done in a different way.
Whether you're on foot or wheels, you'll enjoy the route.
All in all, the Sunrise Mountain and High Point via Appalachian Trail is a long, satisfying trail devoted hikers will enjoy.
Just make sure to wear good shoes!
Keep in mind, dogs can use the trail but they must use a leash.
