With nearly 3,000 lakes and 84,000 ponds, Illinois has a lot of water for a landlocked state. Of course, with all the choices we have, we may prefer to visit one of the clearest lakes in the state. Located near Carbondale, Little Grassy Lake offers clear water in a setting so beautiful that it may end up being your favorite lake.
Little Grassy Lake is a 1,000-acre reservoir located in southern Illinois near Carbondale. It can be found within the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge.
This lovely body of water was created by the damming of Little Grassy Creek, a tributary of the Big Muddy River. It is four miles long, one mile wide, and has a maximum depth of 60 feet. Visitors can also enjoy over 31 miles of scenic shoreline surrounded by forest.
For those who prefer to spend more than a day at this lovely little oasis, Little Grassy Lake Campground and Marina offers full hookup as well as tent sites. Visitors may also rent a pontoon boat, kayak, canoe, or stand up paddleboard from the campground.
If you need to cool off, there's nothing like a refreshing dip in the cool, clear waters of Little Grassy Lake. Head to the campground's sandy beach if you're looking for a spot to swim.
This beautiful lake is not as well-known as some others around the state, but it's one that people return to time and again. It may end up becoming your new favorite lake!
