Consisting of historic structures, a covered bridge, and centuries-old equipment, this living history museum is a unique place to spend a few hours. It’s most definitely worth a visit during your trip to Yosemite, so read on to see why!
Step back in time and explore Yosemite's rich history with a visit to the Pioneer Yosemite History Center. This unique outdoor museum brings the past to life with a variety of historic structures in a gorgeous setting.
The Pioneer Yosemite History Museum is open to the public every day year-round. You'll find the destination located on Wawona Road (Highway 41) near the Wawona Hotel. Visitors can park in the parking lot at the Wawona Store and Pioneer Gift Shop.
The outdoor museum consists of several old structures and pieces of equipment from different eras of Yosemite history. All of the structures that you see here were originally constructed in different locations in Yosemite, with some structures dating back to the mid 1800s.
Adding to the historic setting are real horse-drawn stage wagons that you can ride for a fee. Also keep an eye out for horses in the old staple, blacksmith demonstrations, and other interpretive programs that may be available in the summer.
One of the highlights of this serene outdoor area is the old covered bridge! At the time this covered bridge was built, Wawona was the largest stage stop in the area. All traffic headed towards Yosemite during that era had to cross this bridge.
The bridge also provides access to the riverbank below. On a hot summer day, you'll often see people taking advantage of the river's cold waters. It's a great place to dip your toes, enjoy a picnic, and keep cool.
