Life in Georgia in the 1920s. If you have relatives who were alive during this time, they may have told you that life was simpler, easier in many ways. But the 1920s were also a decade of change and history. While some states were experiencing a huge real estate boom during this time period, Georgia was headed toward a depression, not just because of the stock market crash, but from events that happened much earlier. For instance, due to a combination of overproduction in manufacturing, new man-made fabrics like rayon, and foreign competition, cotton prices in Georgia had been falling. Additionally, the lasting effects of the boll weevil in the mid-1920s had a drastic effect on the economy, especially for small farmers.
But as much as the 1920s were hard on Georgians, there was also growth in the cities, especially for areas such as Savannah and Brunswick. These two cities were flourishing due to their seaports and exporting, as the pulp industry expanded drastically. In addition, Augusta, West Point, Dalton, Griffin, LaGrange, Macon, and Rome all continued growing with textiles and cottonseed oil mills. Columbus, Georgia maintained being an industry leader for the state largely due in part to the iron foundries and textile mills. Take a look at a few photos from the 1920s that show a side of Georgia you may have never seen before.
