Summertime is ripe with excitement here in the Great Lakes State, where nature reigns supreme as a source of entertainment, inspiration, and relaxation. While many Michiganders opt to unwind along our brilliant beaches when temperatures rise, there’s something to be said for exploring the countless waterfalls that make their home here. When you’re ready to cool off and appreciate stunning surroundings, venture to these seven waterfalls in Michigan.
1. Bond Falls (off Bond Falls Rd, Paulding)
As with most of Michigan’s waterfalls, this gem sits in the Upper Peninsula and draws tourists every year with its beautiful atmosphere. The falls themselves tumble over rocky portions along the Ontonagon River, creating a commanding yet soothing scene for all who stop by. Visitors can park near a picnic area before checking out multiple viewing areas that are accessible via a beginner-friendly trail.
2. Tahquamenon Falls (off M-123, Paradise)
No list of Michigan waterfalls is complete without including Tahquamenon, our state’s most famous. Situated within a state park of the same name, Tahquamenon Falls actually consists of two drops: the Upper and Lower Falls. At the nearly 200-foot-wide Upper Falls, you’ll enjoy views of a 50-foot drop and enjoy the sound of roaring water among forested surroundings. Does it get much more magical than this?
3. Munising Falls (off Becker Rd, Munising)
Easily accessible from Munising itself, this waterfall is marvelous in all sorts of weather conditions, but there’s something truly enchanting about dropping by during the summer. Stroll along an 800-foot walkway that’s dotted with greenery, wildflowers, and more before reaching the 50-foot waterfall itself. If that weren’t enough, guests can bring along leashed dogs to round out the family-friendly experience.
4. Sable Falls (off H-58, Grand Marais)
If you don’t mind doing a bit of climbing to snag an unbeatable view, Sable Falls is the spot for you. This waterfall near Grand Marais is another Upper Peninsula treasure, featuring a 75-foot drop surrounded by some of the most vibrant flora and greenery imaginable. Upon parking, you’ll traverse a short path before encountering a 168-step staircase that leads to the prettiest vantage point.
5. Ocqueoc Falls (off M-68, Ocqueoc)
There’s a whole lot to love about Ocqueoc Falls. In addition to its status as the largest waterfall in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, it also earns accolades for accessibility. That’s right: with its carefully designed platforms and pavement, Ocqueoc Falls is the only universally accessible waterfall in the country. In addition to the falls themselves, this stunning area is home to a gorgeous campground that will make your visit complete.
6. Agate Falls (M-28, Trout Creek)
This 39-foot waterfall tumbles over sandstone formations and gives way to some of the most picturesque views in all of Michigan. The park accompanying the falls is typically open between May and October, so summer is a prime time to visit. Upon parking, simply stroll along a well-established trail for less than a mile before encountering unforgettable views of the falls themselves. Be sure to bring along your camera, as Agate Falls is widely considered one of Michigan’s prettiest yet underrated natural attractions.
7. Laughing Whitefish Falls (off Laughing Whitefish Falls Rd, Rock River Falls)
The cheery name of this waterfall is paired perfectly with its vibrant beauty. Laughing Whitefish Falls, situated within a broader state park, seems to appear out of nowhere among stunning white pine forests and greenery galore. To reach the initial overlook, park and embark on a mile-long hike through the woods. If you’re not ready to stop exploring, you’ll find a staircase that leads to a lower view of the mesmerizing falls.
