Colorado is famous for its mountain towns and glistening cities, but those who do not hail from the Centennial State often do not realize that it is also chock-full of charming small towns. Case in point: Manitou Springs, which was just named one of the best small towns in America.
It's official: Manitou Springs is one of the best small towns in America according to Smithsonian Magazine and its list of The 15 Best Small Towns to Visit in 2021.
As per the list, which covers everything "From Alabama’s music capital to the self-proclaimed ‘center of the universe,'" Manitou Springs and its many attractions cannot be missed, with local resident Amy Mogck sharing that “Manitou Springs is the perfect combo of Mother Nature, friendly people, and a robust arts and culture scene."
From Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods to the butt-busting Manitou Incline, Arcade Amusements, and Manitou Brewing Company, you will never run out of things to see and do around Manitou Springs!
In addition to Manitou Springs, Smithsonian Magazine's list of the best small towns also includes other charming communities like Council Grove, Kansas; Muscle Shoals, Alabama; and Hatch, New Mexico (pictured).
Incorporated in 1888, Manitou Springs was founded by General William Jackson Palmer and Dr. William Abraham Bell, who intended to turn the new town into a "scenic health resort" via the healing waters the Ute Indians had been drinking for years.
Today, there are still plenty of "healthy" things to do around town (see: outdoor recreation and spas), plus other fun things like shopping, dining, art galleries, special events, museums, and much more.
