Tori Jane is a storm chaser, writer, photographer, and the village idiot - in that order. When she's not out and about dancing with the meanest storms on planet Earth for funsies she can be found wandering, shooting landscapes, writing, editing photos, and otherwise up to no good. Legend has it that she can also be occasionally spotted typing up short bios in the third person, but those rumors are unsubstantiated.
It was Lydia Deetz in the eclectic ’90s film Beetlejuice who first uttered this intriguing phrase, and to this day, some of us still take it to heart. Some of us prefer the offbeat to the mainstream, and we celebrate our strangeness in spaces crafted with us in mind. Enter Healer, an eclectic celebration of arts and the bizarre that will keep even the oddest among us intrigued. Healer in Indiana is an art and music venue that is truly, genuinely unique, and once you visit, you’ll slowly feel yourself becoming immersed in the high strangeness – and you’ll definitely have to keep coming back for more.
Once upon a time, the building that now houses Healer was an office strip mall.
Dull and uncreative, it was a place where people went to collect a paycheck and work the days away in a quiet, drab white room. Now, it couldn't be further removed from - or more at odds with - its original self.
The space is now a sacred spot for the eclectic and the artsy; it's a strange and beautiful place of respite from the dull routine of waking life designed to take you away from it all - at least for the night.
Equal parts bar, music venue, and art installation, nights spent at Healer are truly the closest we'll ever get to time spent in alternate realities. The atmosphere here is carefully curated to create as much weird, creative zen as possible.
The unmistakably unique vibe is created with a mixture of low-key lighting setups that utilize black lights, fluorescent paint, string lights, colored bulbs, and so much more to feast the eyes upon.
It's almost too much at first, but we promise, you'll adjust. You won't find anything like Healer in Indiana or anywhere else; it's truly a one-of-a-kind Hoosier State treasure, and we'd go as far as to argue that it's already a timeless classic, despite having just opened relatively recently in 2018.
There's live music every weekend, and it usually consists of local and independent artists, as well as the occasional touring singer-songwriter.
Healer prides itself on being "all ages, all the time" and strives to create a hip, authentically artsy space in the heart of downtown Indy for folks from all walks of life to enjoy. Its overall vibe is reminiscent of that of the famed Santa Fe, New Mexico, arts venue Meow Wolf.
Did we mention the arcade? Because it's part arcade, too.
As if eclectic, totally immersive art and indie music weren't cool enough, and as if the atmosphere alone isn't worth visiting for, there's also a '90s-tastic arcade on-site to amuse yourself with, should you be into that kind of thing.
Once you attend one show, you'll probably find yourself coming back for more - and more often.
We don't blame you, of course; even the staff members at Healer are as unique, interesting, and offbeat as the place itself, and we wouldn't have it any other way. You've truly never experienced Healer until you've been to Healer.
