If you consider yourself an explorer, then you probably love hiking to fascinating spots like scenic overlooks, hard-to-reach historical sites, abandoned ruins, and the like. Along a trail near Oakland, Illinois is an abandoned observatory that has been closed since 1981. Its presence is a welcome sight to see and makes this trail all the more interesting to hike and explore.

The Abandoned Observatory Trail is a 2.9-mile loop that is lightly trafficked and rated as easy. It is located within the 671-acre Walnut Point State Park.

Along the way, the trail meanders alongside the Embarrass River for a while and through the forest. You'll also have the opportunity to view plenty of wildlife including many bird species like owls and raptors, several species of trees, and wildflowers in the warmer months.

The main telescope was housed inside the impressive dome which is 40 feet in diameter, and a smaller dome housed a camera. Inside the observatory's main building was an apartment where astronomers working onsite would stay.

If you're an urban explorer, you may be tempted to go inside the observatory and have a look. However, it can only be viewed from the exterior, and entering is strictly forbidden.
