Minnesota’s protected lands are some of the best places to visit to see an abundance of wildlife, and equally amazing forest views. One such place is unmatched by all others due to the sheer size and volume of animals that can be found in its midst.

The Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 40,000 acres of lakes, rivers, marshes, and gorgeous forested rolling hills.

It is one of the most diverse areas in North America where northern hardwood forests, coniferous forests and tallgrass prairie converge to form a perfect wildlife habitat for prairie and forest animals alike.

The distinctive features are the tamarac trees which turn a beautiful gold color in the fall.

The refuge is a perfect place to see all kinds of flora and fauna...

Most notably, bears...

foxes...

Minnesota's state bird, the loon...

and many migratory birds.

This May, head to Tamarac during the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds (May 19-22, 2016) for some amazing birdwatching tours and presentations.

The Visitor Center has stunning views and is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 am-4:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am-5:00 pm, May through Mid-October.
