One of the most notoriously haunted places in North Carolina is supposedly teeming with paranormal activity. If you’re inclined to open yourself up to signs from the other side, then perhaps a visit to Whalehead Club in Corolla is in order. Let’s check it out:
At the time of its construction between 1922 and 1925, the estate of the Knight family (known as Whalehead Club) was considered to be in a remote, undeveloped area along the Currituck Sound.
The area was frequented by thousands and thousands of birds and the Knights who built here commonly hosted friends from out of town who wanted to hunt waterfowl.
The 20-room, 21,000-square-foot mansion they built still stands, unoccupied by residents... well, residents that are still living, anyway.
It's believed, however, that several ghosts still haunt the dwelling and the property.
It's unclear who the ghosts are, but we do know that the Knights picked up and left suddenly in 1933. So it's possible the ghosts moved into the mansion very early on.
Complete with an elevator, the four-story mansion also includes a 6,000-square-foot basement with a French drainage system to keep the water out.
And Whalehead is surrounded by water.
When the mansion was built, the owners had a six-foot canal dug so the structure would officially be on an island.
Today, visitors to Corolla can take a haunted tour of Whalehead Club.
"Legends, Lore, and Ghost Tours" are held every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. from June 14th through August 30th. Learn more about it
here . Space is limited and the cost is $15 per person.
Among the most legendary reported sightings of ghosts at Whalehead are those of a little girl who possibly lives in the basement.
Once upon a time a little boy visiting the mansion with his family went running and screaming to the outside where he reported that a little girl had been taunting him in the basement. But no one in the boy's family saw the little girl. Still others report that the home's elevator often runs to the basement for a pick up when no one is down there to call it.
Another paranormal happening involves the family's dining room where a portrait of Mr. Knight still hangs.
The spot was one in which Mr. Knight would often light up a cigar. Many visitors report smelling a freshly lit cigar while in the dining room.
Other paranormal happenings here are quite enough to make your hair stand on end.
Hear all about them by making a reservation for the tour called "Legends, Lore and Ghost Tours." You can reserve your spot by calling 252-453-9040.
