One of our favorite parts of spring in Colorado is wildflower season! 1. Indian Peaks Wilderness (Ward)

No matter which trail you choose to take (yes, there is more than one!), get ready for a true feast for the senses, as Indian Peaks is chock-full of colorful and fragrant blooms that you will never forget. (Pictured is the 8-mile out-and-back Devil's Thumb Trail.)

2. Chautauqua Park (Boulder)

No time to sneak away from the big city? Then this wildflower field is for you! Located just outside of Boulder, Chautauqua Park has a wildflower trail for everyone, ranging from short and sweet to long and strenuous.

3. Rustler Gulch (Crested Butte)

Crested Butte is nicknamed the "Wildflower Capital of Colorado," so it should come as no surprise that it is also home to one of the most memorable wildflower hikes in the state! Like most of the other wildflower fields on this list, you do have to work a bit to reap the vibrant benefits (in this case, the entire trail is 9 miles out and back) but trust us - it is worth it.

4. West Maroon Pass (Aspen)

Located 10 miles west of Aspen is the trailhead for West Maroon Pass, which comes complete with a stunning hike that showcases a neverending field of native wildflowers AND some incredible Colorado backcountry! (Please note: While wildflowers can be seen at numerous points on the hike, the complete trail spans approximately 13 miles.)

5. Butler Gulch (Idaho Springs)

If you think this photo looks magical, wait until you see Butler Gulch with your own eyes. Located in the Arapaho National Forest near Idaho Springs, Butler Gulch houses one of the most incredible wildflower fields on the Front Range, thanks to its 100+ species of colorful blooms.

6. Herman Gulch (Idaho Springs)

Located a hop, skip, and a jump away from Butler Gulch, Herman Gulch is another jaw-dropping Idaho Springs-area hike that cannot be missed. Nestled away off of I-70 and Exit 218, Herman Gulch is a 6 1/2-mile out-and-back trail that features not only stunning wildflowers but a lush green valley as a backdrop.

Where can I find wildflowers near me in Colorado?
No matter where you are in Colorado you can find wildflower fields near you on hiking trails, city parks, and even on roadside overlooks. Here are a few of our favorite places to find wildflowers in Colorado:

  • American Basin, Lake City, CO: This breathtaking basin in Colorado is one of our favorite places to enjoy a wildflower hike. Since the elevations in this area range from 11,300 to 14,000 feet wildflowers bloom much later than at lower elevations and for a shorter duration. If you can catch the explosion of color from mid-July to early August you are in for a treat. Throw in the mountain views and rushing streams and you have yourself one fantastic outdoor adventure.
  • West Maroon Trail, Aspen, CO: Springtime in Aspen is one of our favorite seasons because there is so much vibrant green popping against the crystal blue sky. During wildflower season, the effect is nothing short of incredible. The West Maroon Trail is 13 glorious miles of the Colorado backcountry. Even if you don't set out to tackle the whole trail you can spend hours enjoying nature in this beautiful sanctuary of wildflowers.
  • Washington Gulch Trail, Crested Butte, CO: When you take the Washington Gulch Trail to Gothic Mountain you are in for a hard climb, but the spring wildflowers will encourage you every step of the way. Also simply called Trail #403, this 7.6-mile out-and-back trail is incredibly beautiful once you tell your legs to stop burning so you can enjoy the show. Even though this isn't an easy stroll through nature we find that the sights and sounds of the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness are even more beautiful because of the extra challenge.
