When you want to get back out into nature and hit the hiking trails, you don’t need to make big travel plans or have a full weekend getaway. Get out your hiking stick, pull on a good pair of hiking boots, and head over to Hubbard Park in Meriden. Whether you want to take a long hike with a view or want to spend the day by the lake, you’ll find just the hiking trail you’re looking for. The best part is these trails will always take you back to the beautiful tower view of a castle.
Hubbard Park's moderate trails range from 3.3 miles to a 6.7-mile hike with elevations ranging from 282 to over 1000 feet. On some trails, you may be able to hear the sounds of the highway at first. But, it won't be long before you'll be listening only to the peaceful sounds of nature and seeing wildlife along the trail.
Experienced hikers looking for more of a challenge may want to try the 5-mile Cat-Hole-Pass trail to get to Castle Craig. The lightly trafficked out and back hike is rocky, steep, and best tackled during the summer months. If you are up to the challenge, it is worth the beautiful views.
Dedicated in 1900 and donated to the town of Meriden by Walter Hubbard, Castle Craig is the highest point on the east coast and the focal point of Hubbard Park. From the observation deck of the tower, visitors can see the Long Island Sound.
While many of the trails are dog friendly, you will want to make sure your dog remains on a leash at all times and isn't likely to pull. Many areas have loose rocks and steep cliff views.
You’ll get the best views of Hubbard Park from March through October, but the park is open any time of the year. Which Hubbard Park trail is your favorite?
