Tucked along the coast just off of Highway 1 is a hidden cove that is so worth the time and patience it takes to seek out. Partington Cove can be reached via a short and steep out-and-back trail. Following the trail, you’ll be treated to the most gorgeous views of the coast and the big blue expanse that is the Pacific Ocean. However, the cove itself will seriously take your breath away! Make it your mission to escape to Partington Cove for a nature scene you’ll never forget.
Located just two miles north of the wildly popular McWay Falls in Big Sur, Partington Cove is a hidden gem that boasts a nature scene like you've never seen before.
Partington Cove is a well-hidden cove along a particularly dramatic section of the Northern California coastline. Finding it requires a brief hike that's both easy to traverse and makes for an unforgettable adventure.
The hike is just over a mile round trip. It's an out-and-back trail that's mildly steep with a total elevation change of 347 feet. It's all downhill getting to the cove, so be sure to prepare yourself for the mild climb back up.
Most of the hike takes place over a road that's well-maintained and easy to follow. It leads you straight to a charming little footbridge that takes you over a creek and into a lush grove of redwood trees. Be sure to look up and enjoy the scenery!
After the redwood grove, you'll reach a junction in the trail that branches off to either side of the cove. Follow the trail and you'll eventually reach a 60-foot-long redwood tunnel that was constructed during the late 19th century. According to legend, the tunnel was once used to smuggle liquor during Prohibition.
After making your way through the tunnel, you'll be greeted by the sight of a brilliant cove with blue waters that looks straight from the Caribbean. Follow the path a little more and you'll be led to a small bench where you can sit and enjoy the view.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the remains of what used to be a landing for shipping lumber out of the cove. Perfectly secluded and boasting magnetic coastal scenery, a visit to Partington Cove is an experience you'll certainly treasure.
