The land of Oz might be a fictional place, but there are plenty of nature spots in Massachusetts that will have you feeling like you’ve entered an enchanting fairytale. The Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail in Wellfleet is no exception. This swampy boardwalk hike is beautiful and spooky at the same time and will give you the feeling that you’ve entered the haunted forest in Oz. While there are probably not any flying monkeys around here, you’ll find mossy trees, mushrooms, and creepy views along this cedar plank loop trail. If you want to feel like you’ve been transported to the haunted forest in the land of Oz, take on the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail on the Cape.
While the haunted forest from Wizard of Oz might not exist in our world, the closest you can get to feeling like you're in the land of Oz is the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail.
This 1.2-mile loop is located in Wellfleet on the Cape Cod National Shoreline, and the fantasy forest is filled with cedar plank boardwalks to stroll through.
These boardwalks allow you to walk right through the swampland, and fully immerse yourself in a Massachusetts nature spot that's both spooky and enchanting.
If you take this swamp trail on a foggy day, you'll be convinced you're in the haunted forest. Rest assured, there are no flying monkeys in these trees.
The only creepy creatures that you do need to be aware of are ticks. Since this trail is located on a swamp, the conditions are wet and the perfect environment for ticks and mosquitos.
While this swamp trail isn't very long, it does take you to views of the Atlantic at the end. You can make it through the haunted forest to be rewarded with views of the ocean on the Cape.
Next time you're looking to try an enchanting swamp hike in Massachusetts, head to the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail and step into the haunted forest. The land of Oz is never too far if you use your imagination!
