One of the MANY perks of hiking around Colorado is that you never know what you will see, whether it be a sapphire lake, majestic wildlife, or fascinating ruins. In terms of the latter, we cannot help but recommend one short and sweet hike in particular, which will lead you through a beautiful forest and past an abandoned mine and other old ruins:
Welcome to the Iowa Hill Trail!
Located near Breckenridge, the Iowa Hill Trail is a 1.2-mile loop that not only winds through the White River National Forest but features a few of the aforementioned surprises.
During your adventure, you will journey through a c. 1800's placer mine site complete with an old boarding house, mining machinery, and other historical surprises.
In addition to the ruins themselves, the Iowa Hill Trail also features many interpretive signs that tell the history of the area and dwellings, making for an experience that is as educational as it is fascinating.
Please note: Despite the short distance, there are a few gradual inclines along the trail; however, there are also plenty of benches and other places to rest along the way.
Access to the Iowa Hill Trail can be found via Airport Road south of downtown Breckenridge. You will find the trailhead near the public works building.
