Here in Minnesota, the landscape is full of beautiful hidden gems. If you know where to look, you can stumble upon shaded trails, peaceful vistas, and ancient forests. And if you’re especially in the know, you may even find a hidden waterfall like the one we’d like to share today. Kawishiwi Falls is far from the state’s popular waterfall haunts, like Gooseberry or Minnehaha. But it’s well worth the trip thanks to the magical hike that leads to the beautiful waterfall. Read on below to learn about how to visit Kawishiwi Falls in northern Minnesota:
Kawishiwi Falls is a beautiful waterfall in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. It is less than 10 miles northeast of Ely.
To visit, hike along the 1.5-mile Kawishiwi Falls Hiking Trail. The trail is easy for most hikers, with flat terrain and a wooden boardwalk through the forest.
Along the way, you'll pass under a shady canopy of bird-filled trees. On the ground, you may spot native wildflowers. You'll be at the waterfall in no time.
The Kawishiwi River tumbles over a stand of rough rocks. Though it is not the state's tallest waterfall, the secluded setting makes it one of the most peaceful.
Depending on the water level, it is even possible to hike down to the river to see the waterfall up close. You can also get a great view from the top of the falls!
Even better: Kawishiwi Falls is beautiful year-round. In the winter, the snow-covered landscape lends a special magic, with the frozen ice the star of the show. You don't want to miss this beautiful hidden waterfall!
