Homestead, Iowa is a bit of an odd town – it’s the only one of the Amana Colonies without “Amana” in its name. Way back in the early 19th century, the Amana community bought Homestead to use as a connection to the railway. In 1875, a 500lb meteorite struck the town – one of only seven to fall in Iowa’s recorded history. Another community claim to fame is that actor Ashton Kutcher considers Homestead his home town. The biggest reason to visit Homestead, though, is to use it as a base camp for exploring the historic and charming Amana Colonies.
