After a few years of grieving and wondering whether or not they would repair and re-open, the world-famous Pike’s Peak Cog Railway reopened in 2021. As one of the best train rides in the USA, this is a bucket-list adventure for all railroad enthusiasts.
In March 2018, it was first announced that the 100-year-old train would close, as months of costly repairs continued to add up, and a proper repair would prove to be even more expensive and could take years to complete.
Because of these combined factors, it was said that the Railway - which is one of the last remaining in the world - may never re-open, leaving Coloradans, tourists, history buffs, and train enthusiasts heartbroken.
Fortunately, the rumors of the Railway never re-opening were soon laid to rest, as an extensive $150M renovation began in the spring of 2019, which consisted of demolishing and re-building both the tracks and the summit building at the top of the mountain.
"After many months of research, planning, and community support, we’re excited to share the progress we’re making toward reopening in May 2021," shared The Broadmoor, who have an in-depth timeline of work on their website.
Opened in 1891, the Pikes Peak Cog Railway runs 9 miles and takes nearly 3 hours to reach the summit, which it accomplishes via cogs that align with a toothed rack rail that safely moves the train up-and-down steep grades.
Tickets to ride the new and improved Pike's Peak Cog Railway will be available in early February 2021. For more information, please visit the Pike's Peak Cog Railway's website.
