Alaska has some pretty magnificent hiking trails, many of which are wonderful for winter hiking. The Flattop Sunnyside Trail in Alaska is no exception, offering killer views all the way to the top. It’s a quick drive from downtown Anchorage and can be enjoyed all year long. Are you ready for an adventure?
Not a 20-minute drive from the downtown region of Alaska’s largest city is a hike that will blow you away.
The Flattop Sunnyside Trail is one of the most fun hikes to do in the Anchorage area. That’s because of its accessibility, stunning mountain top views, and relative ease compared to other hikes that Alaska offers.
This hike swoops around the back of Flattop. Even though there are plenty of switchbacks, the climb is much easier than its more well-known brother, the Flattop Trail that takes hikers up the front of the mountain.
This is a great option for those who want the views without the steep ascension that Flattop Trail is known for. You’ll still get a fantastic workout, though!
It’s hard to pick a favorite view because they’re all gorgeous. Taking a picture is the perfect excuse for a quick break from some of the trail's steeper segments.
Bring some good gear, especially if you’re heading out in the winter.
Wear your ice cleats or spikes to remain steady in the slippery areas. You'll also want to consider dressing in layers because you might sweat heading up, but the wind can be brisk and temperatures can drop without warning.
Visitors will find plenty of parking at the trailhead.
There’s a $5.00 parking fee if you don’t have an annual pass. If you’re a local, consider supporting the parks and saving yourself some money - because this hike is addicting. You’ll be doing it over and over again.
The next time you’re in the Anchorage area and want a quick and beautiful hike, make sure to hit up this fantastic trail.
It’s popular because it’s so good! You’ll want to explore this hike in each and every season.
