Here in Northern California, we like to start ’em young when it comes to adventuring. After all, how could you not when live in such a beautiful region? One of NorCal’s greatest treasures is Lassen Volcanic National Park, and it’s filled with excellent hikes that are suitable for both young and old. The hike around Manzanita Lake is especially family-friendly and accomplishing it is a great way to get a taste of this wonderful park. Take a look:
The Manzanita Lake Trail is a great place to start when visiting the beautiful Lassen Volcanic National Park. Showing off some of the park's greatest features, it makes for an easy adventure that's perfectly family-friendly.
The loop trail is just two miles long and is flat for its entirety. You probably won't be working up a sweat on this trail, as it's more of a leisurely walk around the lake.
Located near the park's entrance, Manzanita Lake is a gorgeous sight. It was formed about 300 years ago when a rock avalanche formed a dam on Manzanita Creek. This is definitely what we'd call a "happy accident!"
Its convenient location makes it a popular destination for park visitors. The trail is well-shaded by surrounding Jeffrey pines and willows, and hikers can enjoy fantastic views of Lassen Peak and Chaos Crags.
The area is also rich with wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled! The surrounding forest typically offers sightings of woodpeckers and deer, whereas the lake boasts opportunities to spot ducks, geese, muskrat, and even beavers.
The trail circles the entirety of the lake, so you can enjoy a 360-degree view of this incredible wonder. There are also a few spur trails that branch off to destinations like the Loomis Museum and the Manzanita Lake picnic area. Feel free to explore to your heart's content.
