In the 18th century, this area was home to a powerful iron furnace. Here, workers built a variety of necessities - including horseshoes for the Continental Army. As time went on, however, the iron supply dried up. In the 1830s, the furnace was replaced by a grist mill.
The state of Connecticut purchased the land in 1918 and turned it into the spectacular park you see today.
