This interesting and difficult trail leads you all the way up to the steepest summit in the state of Nebraska! The hike up will get you working, but the views are worth it.
The summit of Lover’s Leap Butte is named after a local legend.
A young Native American woman fell in love with a man her father did not approve of. He arranged her marriage to another man from a different tribe and killed her love. Distraught, she leaped from the top of the rock formation while singing the Death Song.
It’s a beautiful trail in the eastern part of the state park.
You’ll climb up 1,289 feet of elevation gain before you reach the summit. The summit sits at an impressive 4,390 feet above sea level!
The trail itself, the East Red Cloud Loop, will take you to the summit before heading back to where you started.
The entire trail is 6.5 miles long. There are many areas that are difficult to hike and can feel more like a scramble as you travel over rocks and uneven surfaces.
But the view from the top is worth every step you take.
Make sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection. The trail will take a couple of hours, and you want to be sure you’re well prepared.
You’ll be amazed by the vistas from the top.
You can access the parking lot from Highway 20. Pass the Legend Buttes Golf Course, and pull over into the parking lot. You may have to climb over the fence if the gate is locked, but don't worry - as long as you've purchased a park permit to enter the park, you can use the trails.
