Oregon’s coastal towns are all little gems full of natural beauty, great seafood, and friendly folks. We know we’re not supposed to have favorites, but Depoe Bay certainly holds a special place in our hearts. This pretty little town has plenty to see and do, and we just never tire of its beauty.
Welcome to Depoe Bay! This pretty little seaside town is home to around 1,500 people, but it hosts visitors from all over the world.
You'll never get bored in Depoe Bay. Start by taking a stroll along the seawall to check out the scenery...
...and if the waves are large enough, you might get a close-up glimpse of the spouting horn.
At the end of the seawall, you'll come to the OPRD Whale Watching Center. Pop inside to see some interactive displays about whales and marine life, and view the resident whales from the huge windows.
You'll want to spend some time gazing out across the waves while you're here.
Several whales hang out right here in plain sight, and it's common to see them feeding in the bay.
Just outside the Whale Watching Center, you'll find a staircase that will take you down and under the Depoe Bay Bridge.
This beautiful bridge was constructed in 1927, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
On the other side of the bridge, you'll find Depoe Bay Harbor. It's the smallest navigable harbor in the world, covering just six acres. The boats have a channel that's just 50 feet wide to navigate from the harbor to the open water.
Pay a visit to the Whale, Sealife, and Shark Museum. Created by Carrie Newell, owner of Whale Research EcoExcursions, it has several displays and exhibits that teach you all about the whales and wildlife found here.
To see Depoe Bay's whales up close, take a whale-watching tour!
You might also be interested in a fishing expedition. Several charters offer fishing trips right from the harbor.
After a day of exploring, whale watching, and fishing, it's time for some dinner.
The Public Horn is located right above the harbor, and offers great seafood and excellent views. Another good choice is Tidal Raves, which is just north of the downtown area. There are several other great dining options in the area as well!
