If you’re excited to get up close and personal to winter arriving in our great state, the Williwaw Lakes Trail in the Chugach National Forest will offer great views of the seasons changing. Grab your boots and something warm, and get high in the mountains over Anchorage.
There’s a great little trail that brings you out into the Chugach National Forest. The William Lakes Trail offers stunning views of both Anchorage and the wilderness right outside of it.
You’ll head up into the mountains to begin your trek. The trail actually starts after hiking three miles out into the mountains, before you’ll come to the branch off for Williwaw Lakes Trail.

From parking lot to parking lot, you can expect to hike just over 16 miles. But the views along the way are work every minute!

The elevation gain sounds steep at 2,585 ft, but as it’s spread over such a long distance, it’s not too bad. There are some steep parts, but there’s a lot of trekking through relatively easy areas.
There’s plenty of parking at the start of the trailhead. You’ll have to pay $5 for a day pass for each car parked in the lot.
On a clear day, you might see Denali, and Anchorage always looks beautiful. Fall offers a nice clear view, as the dry days will wipe out any humidity that might obscure your city views.
This is such a wonderful way to watch the termination dust creep down the mountains. This hike will make you appreciate the wonder of winter arriving in our wonderful state!
