Tucked along the Snake River is the only archeological park in Idaho, and it’s definitely worth a quick (or not-so-quick) stop. Located in Melba, Celebration Park is a small but incredibly scenic area that is also steeped in native history. It’s famously home to petroglyphs that are several thousand years old, but the scenic beauty and quiet atmosphere make it the type of place you’ll want to return to again and again. Established in 1989, Celebration Park in Melba is considered the only archaeological park in Idaho. The area is known for its ancient collection of petroglyphs, but that's not the only thing you'll love about it!
Located right along the Snake River and surrounded by the striking high desert landscape, the park's setting is simply stunning. The park is open to visitors year-round and provides access to hiking, boating, fishing, and hunting opportunities in the Snake River Canyon.
Visitors can take a self-guided tour of the park or arrange for a guided tour with park personnel. Petroglyphs can be found in rich concentrations throughout the park, especially near the visitor center.
The park's petroglyphs were created up to 12,000 years ago by Paiute Indians who have wintered in the area for thousands of years. Much of this fascinating rock art can be found on giant lava boulders that were distributed here from the Bonneville Flood.
Of course, you'll want to take some time to admire the park's most iconic feature: Guffey Bridge. The historic bridge was built in 1897 as a railroad bridge. It has since been renovated as a pedestrian bridge, and it makes for a great photo-op.
Celebration Park makes for a fantastic day trip destination, but it's also a unique camping spot. The park's campground is located right next to the river and sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
