Hiking doesn’t have to be hard. We repeat: hiking doesn’t have to be hard. There are a lot of ways to hit the trails and enjoy a fun day outside in Rhode Island and plenty of them include more of a leisurely walk or stroll. We especially love the routes that are family-friendly and simple enough for little legs. And bonus points for anything that leads us to a fun natural feature. That’s why we love this trail so much!
For a lovely day outside in Rhode Island head straight for Lincoln Woods State Park where you'll find the (aptly named!) Lincoln Woods Trail.
The 3.1-mile loop is just one of the many trails in the park, but due to its gradual (if any!) elevation, this one is great for little legs who might be new to hiking.
People have reported that the start of the trail is fairly easy to find, but following the path requires some attention since things aren't well-marked. The good news is that this place is usually busy enough that there should be someone to ask if you get confused. But, always be sure to have a map before you set off on any trail.
Another thing that makes this area great for families is the availability of picnic tables near the lake. And boardwalk in some areas make for some fun changes to the trail.
While the route itself is a fabulous ramble through the woods, the lake is truly what we love most. The views over the flat body of water are peaceful.
Once you've navigated the entire loop, you can choose to head home or check out some of the other trails in the park.
Hikers love this area, but more and more cyclists are realizing just how fun these trails are, too. Most everyone is polite, but always be sure to check your surroundings. And then, enjoy yourself! Rhode Island is a great place to be and the many outdoors options for families make us lucky to be here.
Lincoln Woods Trail can be found within Lincoln Woods State Park. You can learn more about it on alltrails.com. You can learn more about the state park on their official website. Feel free to bring the pups, but be sure to keep them on a leash.
