“Scariest” isn’t what people usually look for when planning their next trip destination, unless they’re a ghost hunter or an adrenaline junkie. No one can argue that Connecticut is one of the prettiest states, especially in the fall and spring. But it’s also one of the scariest too! Here are 12 reasons that prove Connecticut is not just your average haunting:
That means it's old. The sixth oldest state in the country, to be exact. The older the place, the more history it has. But long histories come with lots of secrets and Connecticut is no exception.
Most people think of Massachusetts when they hear witches but the first execution for witchcraft actually took place right here in Hartford. Alse Young of Windsor was hanged at what is now the site of the Old State House. Fun fact: her daughter would be one of the accused in Salem thirty years later.

In recent years, the number of indian burial grounds being unearthed, or discovered, has increased due to new projects and developments. Some are as shallow as 18 inches below us. So a poltergeist could be in the near future.

Everyone knows that insane asylums and the like are usually a hotspot for paranormal activity. Connecticut has a number of these places from years of volunteering to take on overflow, plus leading the way in heliotropic treatment of children. But there also came stories of abuse and suicide.
The historical societies and revivals are thriving in this state, which means instead of running from ghosts we're embracing them! Inns, lounges, restaurants, and everything in between are still being used and visited despite reports of the paranormal. Some people just love haunted places.
There seem to be a lot of places still standing despite years of not being used. Even haunted places are left standing. I think the practical people aren't too bothered, but for superstitious people like me this is bad voodoo. The longer these buildings stand, the stronger the ghosts get.

In fact, Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven was the first incorporated cemetery in the United States. Not only do we have a bunch of them, but many of the cemeteries feature a ghost or two. Connecticut averages one cemetery every 54 square miles. California, who has the most cemeteries in the country, has one every 330 square miles. So we have packed a lot of graves into a small space!

I have a few friends guilty of not destroying the old well myself. They look pretty and they add charm to the property, but wells are also thought to be responsible for helping spirits escape to the surface. Some believe that wells draw in animals and small children as well.
Dudleytown is a fine example of the spookiness of Connecticut. This entire town is demonically possessed. Not to mention Bara-Hack and the village for tiny people. When you have entire towns being haunted, you know your state is a big deal.
It's not just buildings and haunted houses. There are haunted streets, parks, and hills. It's starting to feel like anywhere could be the home of a spirit these days, so be on the look out for suspicious activity. If you see any orbs, mysterious gatherings of fog, or see through people on your next walk you may have stumbled upon a haunted area.
When Hollywood decides they not only want to tell your stories, but they want to use your locations to tell other stories as well, you have to consider your state is either really scary or it looks really scary. But given this list, we know Connecticut definitely has its ghosts. The Conjuring is one of many true ghost stories that took place here in Connecticut.
Pretty spooky stuff! But don’t let that stop you from enjoying all the not so haunted stuff, like the amazing parks and river views. Just don’t go in to any abandoned buildings or stay out too late. You never know what might be lurking around…
