Fort Gaines, which was built in 1821, is a historic masonry fort that sits on the eastern end of Dauphin Island, Alabama. It's best known for its role in the American Civil War's Battle of Mobile Bay.
If you've ever heard the phrase "Damn the torpedoes...Full speed ahead!" and wondered where it came from, wonder no more. It's a world-famous command that was shouted at Fort Gaines by Admiral David Farragut during the Battle of Mobile Bay.
Sadly, due to on-going shoreline erosion, Fort Gaines is one of America's most endangered historic sites. However, it's still one of America's most well-preserved masonry forts.
In addition to Fort Gaines' great history, it's also known for having lots of paranormal activity.
For example, several of the fort's visitors have witnessed the spirits of military-dressed men, have felt cold spots, and have heard low whispers while touring the historic site.
In one of its tunnels, the laughter of children has even been reported.
