When the leaves begin to change color, it’s time to get outside and explore all that Virginia has to offer. In truth, the options are overwhelming and it may be difficult to choose. Fortunately, we have just the trail in mind that promises a short-and-sweet excursion with a big payoff when it comes to leaf-peeping. Fox Hollow Trail is a 1.2-mile loop near Front Royal that will immerse you into a landscape of autumn beauty. So lace up those boots and let’s get started!
Fox Hollow Loop is a relatively popular hike situated in Shenandoah National Park. If you haven't had a chance to check out this trail, fall is an ideal time.
It's a perfect hike for the whole family, given that it remains relatively flat for the entire 1.2-mile loop and is rated as kid-friendly by Shenandoah National Park.
Along the way, hikers will notice signs of the Fox Family, who once lived here in the 1800s. Stones from former buildings as well as a cemetery speak to the lives that were lived here before the property became managed by the park.
By the 1930s, all the families who lived in the area had to leave due to the creation of the park. This bittersweet moment seems to be preserved by the trail, which once existed as open pastures of corn and wheat.
As you continue along the trail, you'll marvel at the various shades of yellow, gold, red, and orange. This hardwood forest totally transforms during autumn.
The trees you'll spot on this trek are oaks, hickories, and poplars.
So if you're looking to get a glimpse of the park's history as well as the beautiful changing seasons, head to Fox Hollow Trail. The trailhead is located at Mile 4.7 across from the Dickey Ridge Visitors Center.
