When Iowan Ruth Rasmussen bought a set of salt and pepper shakers to commemorate her trip to th Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, she had no idea that the purchase would impact her entire life. The pair, purchased in 1946, was the first of more than 14,500 salt and pepper shaker pairs that she would add to her collection throughout her life. The Traer Salt and Pepper Shaker Gallery is a quirky Iowa museum dedicated to curating one of the largest collections in the world and continuing her work.
The Traer Salt and Pepper Shaker Gallery is open for tours from April 1st through November 30th, Tuesday through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and open by appointment in the ‘off-season’. They’re closed on major holidays, and tours cost just $5 for adults, $1 for children 5-12, and children under 5 get in for free.
