When exploring Northern California’s wonderful landscape, a historic Chinese temple that’s been perfectly preserved is one of the last things you’d expect to stumble upon. Funnily enough, that’s exactly what you’ll find at Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park. Located roughly an hour outside of Redding, this incredible temple offers visitors a rare glimpse into the past and it’s endlessly fascinating.
Located right at the intersection of Oregon Street and Main Street, Weaverville Joss House State Historic Park is a historic landmark that definitely makes for an interesting place to visit.
Named a state historic site in 1956, the park's purpose is to preserve and protect a structure known as The Temple Among The Tree Beneath The Clouds. Originally built in 1874, it is the oldest Chinese temple in California, and it's still in use to this very day.
The structure you see today was built as a replacement after the original temple had been damaged by fire. Intricately designed and decorated, the temple is a true work of art both inside and out. It's amazing to see how well it's been preserved over the years!
The temple's exterior is eye-catching, to say the least, but the interior is just as noteworthy. Filled with vibrant colors, beautiful adornments, and old artifacts, your eyes simply won't know what to look at first.
The park also boasts a small visitor center and museum. On display are a variety of art objects, photographs, mining tools, and weapons used in the 1854 Tong War. It's an amazing glimpse back in time to a part of history that's rarely talked about.
The park is open to the public Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Temple tours leave on the hour every hour during this time and are a great way to learn all about this historic destination. Alternatively, you can take a 360-degree virtual tour from their website!
