Exciting news, West Virginia! The national Rails-To-Trails Conservancy organization just announced their choice for the 2020 Rail-Trail Hall Of Fame Inductee : the Mon River Trail System right here in West Virginia!
The Mon River Trail System is a 48-mile rail-trail conglomeration that runs from the Pennsylvania border through Morgantown, West Virginia, and beyond. It is comprised of multiple trails: the Mon River North and South Trails, the Caperton Trail, and the Deckers Creek Trail.
The trail system gets its name from the Monongahela River, which it follows for a good portion of the trail.
There are multiple trailhead parking areas that provide easy access to the Mon River Rail-Trail, most with plenty of space for parking. The North Mon River Trail runs from the Pennsylvania border to Star City, West Virginia. The Caperton Trail takes the trail system through Morgantown. The Decker's Creek Trail heads east in Morgantown and continues into Preston County. The South Mon River Trail links the Caperton Trail with Prickett's Fort.
Foot and bike traffic are welcome, but ATVs are prohibited on this rail-trail system.
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, the Mon River network is a beautiful, popular trail system, and it recently received a well-deserved honor: it was inducted into the Rail-Trail Hall of Fame!
Come see what all the fuss is about, and as you use the trail, keep your eyes peeled! The surrounding countryside is full of natural wonders, wildlife (especially birds!), and a beautiful variety of wildflowers and other plants.
