There are more than 2,000 cemeteries in New Jersey but only one is the oldest continually operated, privately owned cemetery in the United States. Eglington Cemetery was established in 1776 and is still active to this day. It is open to the public (offices are currently closed) and visitors are expected to be respectful. It is quite beautiful but it’s also, according to paranormal experts, incredibly haunted.

Notable interments include congressmen and senators James Matlack, Henry C. Loudenslager , and Robert C. Hendrickson, professional baseball player Ray Narleski, singer Joanie Weber, NASCAR drivers Bud Olsen and Jackie McLaughlin, and murder victim Alvin Milton Day, Junior.

Alvin Day, just 24 at the time, was killed during what has been called the first shooting spree in the United States. The "Walk of Death" occurred in East Camden in 1949. Thirteen men, women, and children were killed.

The cemetery is nearly as active in the day, filled with family members and locals enjoying the beautiful, peaceful place. It has gardens, striking headstones, a fountain, miles of walkways, and plenty of open space.

The cemetery office (as of last 2019) offered a map that pointed out notable gravesites. They may be made available again when the offices reopen. This cemetery is just as important to the living as it is for the dead. Curious visitors are welcome but should not create messes or disturbances.
