If you have ever visited Colorado’s Western Slope, you know what a “peach” it is (see what I did there?), and have probably visited the likes of Grand Junction, Palisade, and maybe even Fruita. While all of these western towns are downright delightful, hidden gem small towns are hiding out around the area, too, including the must-visit Clifton:
Tucked along I-70 between Grand Junction and Palisade, Clifton is a census-designated place that is home to approximately 20,000 residents.
Described by the Colorado Tourism Office as "Sometimes overshadowed by the towns that flank it — the mountain biking hub of Fruita and the Western Slope's largest city, Grand Junction — Clifton is worth a stop," this small town is the epitome of the Slope, thanks, in part, to its surrounding landscape.
Like most Western Slope towns, Clifton is home to sky-high plateaus, mesas, and mountains, but also boasts such places as the pictured James M. Robb Colorado River State Park, which is home to nearly 900 acres of fishing, hiking trails, water for boating, and hunting.
If you love horses and wildlife, Clifton is the place for you, too, thanks to its close proximity to the incredible Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Area.
What is a Western Slope town without a vineyard or 2? No need to fret, as Clifton has that, too, plus other unique shopping and dining opportunities!
Do you crave a little time in the "big" city? Clifton - which is considered to be a suburb of Grand Junction - is a short drive away from this western Colorado metropolis.
