When it comes to beautiful drives through the middle of nowhere, Wyoming sure has a lot of options! Check out one underrated back country byway in Wyoming that shows off an underrated side of the Bighorn Mountains.
The Red Gulch/Alkali Backcountry Byway is a 32-mile path that winds through gravel and dirt roads along the foothills and lower canyons of the Bighorn Mountains.
Before you head out, check the National Backcountry Byway kiosk. There's one near the beginning of each end of the byway, and it will tell you about road conditions and the history of the route.
You'll need a high clearance vehicle to navigate the route, and you'll need to carry emergency equipment (including a spare tire!) for your safety. Be sure to check in with someone before your journey.
Even though you'll only be traveling 32 miles, you can expect the drive to take at least 2 hours. Plan extra time for exploring the foothills of the Bighorns, because you'll pass quite a few interesting spots!
Some spots along the route look like they're straight from Mars. Many people who don't get out and explore the Cowboy State have no idea that you can find these incredible red rocks here.
Dispersed camping is allowed in National Forests, so you can plan an extended visit to the Bighorns and take a day to appreciate the Red Gulch / Alkali Backcountry Byway.
