The best hikes are always the ones that make you feel completely transported by the scenery it has to offer. Located in Tahoe National Forest, the Euchre Bar Trail is a hiking trail that does just that. It’s just over five miles long but it packs in a LOT, including stunning canyon scenery, a charming suspension footbridge, and remnants of long-abandoned mining camps. Located near Foresthill, California is a hiking trail that's definitely calling your name. The Euchre Bar Trail is a 5.28-mile adventure that packs in a ton of scenic beauty and includes an opportunity to cross the most enchanting suspension footbridge.
The trailhead has two different access points, the simpler of which can be reached by taking Interstate 80 to the Alta exit. From the exit, take Casa Loma Road and turn right just before the overpass. Continue on the road, bearing left after crossing the railroad tracks. From here the road takes you to the trailhead.
It's only about a two-mile trek down to Euchre Bar but it's steep and you'll want to take it carefully. Descending into the canyon is relatively easy, but keep in mind that you'll have to climb back out so be sure to conserve your energy for the way back.
The trail is steep but it's in good condition and offers plenty of shade. You'll be mesmerized by the rich natural beauty that can be found along the trail, but there's plenty of man-made wonders to be discovered along the way as well, including the gorgeous suspension footbridge that crosses the North Fork of the American River.
Keep an eye out for other man-made treasures! The trail also passes by old mining ruins, ditches, and several pieces of mining equipment left behind from the Gold Rush era. In fact, Euchre was a card game that was popular among early miners.
Down at Euchre Bar, the area is filled with glistening emerald pools. They boast icy cold water which is simply irresistible on a summer day. You could spend hours soaking in one of the swimming holes, relaxing on the riverbank, or exploring the other trails in the area.
