1. Scott's Run Nature Preserve

Scott's Run is a nature-filled oasis not far from Washington D.C., yet you'll feel worlds away from the city as you explore these secluded trails. In the 1970s, this area of land was spared from urban development and originally called the Dranesville District Park. Visit today and prepare to be enchanted by expansive views of the Potomac as well as the magnificent waterfall accessed via Scott's Run River Trail. Constructed in the 1750s, Chapman's Mill (also known as Beverley's Mill) is a former grist mill that has witnessed decades of history. In fact, it was at the heart of the Civil War Battle of Thoroughfare Gap on August 28, 1862. Tragically, the stone mill suffered a fire in 1998. Today, visitors will find the ruins to be both haunting and mesmerizing. The mill is privately managed and preservation efforts mean it's not open every day to the public. Therefore, it's best to visit during a weekday if possible.
